זוהי רשימה של מגוון טריטוריות שהיו תחת שליטתה הפוליטית של בריטניה. ביחד טריטוריות אלו ידועות כאימפריה הבריטית.
מיון הטריטוריות
[עריכת קוד מקור | עריכה]בשנות ה-20 של המאה ה-19 (שיאה של האימפריה) אפשר למיין הטריטוריות שלה לפי הקטגוריות הבאות:
- הממלכה המאוחדת עצמה, המורכבת מאנגליה וווילס, סקוטלנד, אירלנד (רק צפון אירלנד מ-1922).
- נסיכויות הכתר הבריטי האי מאן, ג'רזי, וגרנזי (השתיים האחרונים נקראים ביחד "איי התעלה"). האיים, שנחשבים כחלק מהאיים הבריטים, מעולם לא נחשבו כחלק מבריטניה עצמה, אך הם מעולם לא נחשבו כקולוניה; הפרלמנט הבריטי מנהל את כל ענייני החוץ והצבא שלהם, אך לכל אחד מהם יש רשויות פוליטיות ורשויות חוק נפרדות.
- מושבות היו טריטוריות שיועדו ליישובי קבע. הכתר הבריטי טען בעלות מלאה עליהן, אך למרות זאת הן לא היו חלק מהממלכה המאוחדת עצמה. החוק שלהם היה החוק המקובל של אנגליה, וכמו כן כל פעולה חוקתית ומשפטית שיצאה בפרלמנט הבריטי חלה גם עליהן. הרשויות המלכותיות בדרך כלל מינו אנשים לתפקיד מושל, המונחה בידי הממשלה הבריטית. במהלך הזמן, למספר מושבות הוענקה הזכות לממשלה עצמאית.

מסופה של המאה ה-19 ועד תחילתה של המאה ה-20 עוד קטגוריה נוספה לרשימה, הדומיניון. הדומיניונים היו קולוניות, או איחוד של מספר קולוניות, שהחלו להרגיש כשווי זכויות לבריטניה עצמה, ולא כנחותה ממנה. הכרה אישית בנקודת המבט החדשה הזו הפכה חוקית בתקנון ווסטמינסטר של 1931.
טריטוריות נותרות
[עריכת קוד מקור | עריכה]עשרים שנה לאחר עצמאותה של הודו ב-1947 (שנחשבה לקולוניה החשובה ביותר באימפריה), רוב הטריטוריות הבריטיות קיבלו עצמאות מלאה. כיום רק מעט מן הטריטוריות (שלאחר 2002 נקראות "הטריטוריות הבריטיות שמעבר לים") נשארו בידי בריטניה; רובן הם איים קטנים עם אוכלוסייה מעטה, וחלקן הם איים מרוחקים בכדור הארץ. הריבונות על איי פוקלנד ועל איי ג'ורג'יה הדרומית ואיי סנדוויץ' הדרומיים עם מקור לויכוח עם ארגנטינה, והריבונות על גיברלטר היא מקור לויכוח עם ספרד. לטריטוריה הבריטית באנטרקטיקה יש הכרה עולמית נמוכה והיא חופפת לטריטוריות של ארגנטינה וצ'ילי.

חבר העמים הבריטי
[עריכת קוד מקור | עריכה]רוב הטריטוריות לשעבר של האימפריה חברות בחבר העמים הבריטי. למרות שהמלכה אליזבת' השנייה היא ראש חבר העמים, זהו רק תואר סימלי. בכל מקרה, היא נשארה ראש המדינה לכל דבר ל-16 ממדינות חבר העמים (כולל בריטניה עצמה). אף אחת ממערכות היחסין הללו מסמלת את המשך השליטה הבריטית על אף אחת מן המדינות הללו.
אירלנד
[עריכת קוד מקור | עריכה]לאחר שמונה חודשים של מלחמת עצמאות בין הלאומנים האירים לבין השלטונות הבריטים ב-1919-1921, רוב אירלנד הוקמה כדומיניון נפרד שנקרא המדינה האירית החופשית. בסוף התהליך שהחל באמצע שנות ה-30, הקשר בין אירלנד לבריטניה נשבר ב-1949, כשאירלנד הפכה לרפובליקה. החלק הצפון-מזרחי של האי הוא עדיין חלק מבריטניה עד היום הזה.
לפני ששולבה אירלנד בתוך בריטניה הגדולה ב-1801, מערכת היחסים איתה הייתה משהו כמו שילוב של קולוניה ושל נסיכות כתר בריטי.
הנובר
[עריכת קוד מקור | עריכה]מ-1714 עד ל-1837 הוחזק הכתר הבריטי בידי סדרת מלכים שהיו גם אלקטורים (מאוחר יותר מלכים) של הנובר, מדינה בצפון מערבה של גרמניה. זה היה לחלוטין איחוד בין שתי המדינות. מאחר ששמרה הנובר על עצמאותה הפוליטית, היא לא נחשבה כחלק מהאימפריה הבריטית.
